The deity’s idol is made from a single rock and embellished with three heads, inspiring adoration. History
The Chandrika Devi temple's history is shrouded in mystery, even though its present layout dates back over three centuries. It is said that the prince Chandraketu met the goddess while riding the Ashvamedha horse near the Gomti River, which resulted in the temple's construction. Despite being destroyed by foreign invaders in the 12th century, it was restored by local people who discovered an idol of the goddess within impenetrable jungles, establishing Mahi Sagar Tirth.
Chandrika Devi Temple Construction
According to folklore, the son of Lucknow's founder pleaded for protection from Chandrika Devi while traveling down the Gomti River at night. His spiritual confidence prompted the original construction of the temple, which was eventually destroyed by invaders. Another tale comes from the Dwapara Yuga, when Barbarika, the son of Ghatotkacha, spent three years worshiping Chandrika Devi to get divine empowerment.
